A video featuring a Catholic priest preaching against stealing has gone viral recently, capturing the attention of many Kenyans, particularly due to its alleged connection to President William Ruto. In the video, the priest, Father Charles Kinyua, delivers a passionate sermon addressing issues of corruption and dishonesty, seemingly in the presence of Ruto.
The footage sparked heated discussions on social media, with some viewers interpreting it as a direct admonition to the president regarding his administration’s perceived failings. However, upon closer examination, it was revealed that the video had been manipulated. The clips were edited together from different occasions, misleadingly suggesting that Ruto was present during the sermon about thieves.
Fact-checking efforts have confirmed that the original sermon took place on October 10, 2024, during a live-streamed service on Father Kinyua’s YouTube channel, as seen here, https://youtu.be/lGDRm3MsSbQ
The priest’s message focused on a 25-day novena aimed at financial wealth and prosperity, encouraging hard work and generosity instead of dishonest means of earning money.
“If you are a thief, quit stealing. Instead, use your hands for good hard work and then give generously to others in need, this verse is for the thieves. Especially those who are with us in this mass and the thieves following us live, have you heard us you thieves?” the priest says.
Importantly, President Ruto was not part of this congregation; he was attending a separate event at State House.
This incident highlights the ongoing issue of misinformation circulating on social media, particularly regarding political figures. As people navigate these narratives, it underscores the need for critical engagement with media content and verification of facts before drawing conclusions.
